１９４５年兵庫県生まれ。慶應義塾大学独文科卒業。「鹽壺の匙」で三島由紀夫賞、「漂流物」で平林たい子賞、「赤目四十八瀧心中未遂」で直木賞、「武蔵丸」で川端康成文学賞を受賞。
